Discovering Your Core Values: A Path to Living for Christ

Our values shape every aspect of our lives—from how we see ourselves to how we relate to others and navigate challenges. For Christians, our values should align with God’s Word, guiding us to live a life that glorifies Him. By identifying your core values in the light of scripture, you can make decisions that honor God and reflect His purpose for your life.

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” – Psalm 139:23 (NIV)

Taking time for sincere introspection is essential. Without it, we risk drifting through life, disconnected from God’s plan for us. I know this because I lived it. For years, I chased an idea of success that the world defined, not realizing it didn’t align with my faith or my calling. This disconnect left me feeling restless and unfulfilled, until one moment of clarity changed my perspective.

I’d spent years working in the financial services industry, striving for worldly success, but my heart remained unsettled. It wasn’t until I stepped away and sought God’s guidance that I began to understand the disconnect. During a prayerful walk, I reflected on the times I felt most alive and realized my joy came from encouraging and leading others. In that moment, I felt God calling me to a life focused on inspiration and service to others.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

This realization didn’t come without challenges. To realign my life with God’s plan, I had to let go of things that no longer served His purpose for me. Much like the autumn season, where trees shed their leaves to prepare for new growth, I had to release certain career goals and relationships. While difficult, this process brought renewal and clarity.

Through this journey, I discovered that core values are deeply connected to our identity in Christ. When we live in alignment with these values, we experience peace, joy, and purpose. Jesus Himself said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” – John 10:10 (NIV). Living in alignment with God’s purpose allows us to step into that abundant life.

If you’re ready to embark on your own journey of self-reflection and alignment with God’s will, start by asking these prayerful questions:

  1. When was the last time I felt truly joyful? How did God’s presence guide me in that moment?

  2. Who are five people of faith I admire? What Christlike qualities do they embody?

  3. What gifts has God given me that bring me energy and fulfillment?

  4. What activities or environments hinder my relationship with God?

  5. If I trusted God completely, what bold steps would I take for His glory?

  6. What legacy do I want to leave behind as a follower of Christ?

  7. How can my relationships reflect God’s love and grace?

  8. What areas of my life have I not fully surrendered to God?

  9. When have I felt proud of walking in obedience to God’s call?

This process will not always be easy. Jesus reminds us in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” The challenges you face while uncovering your core values and aligning your life with God’s plan are opportunities for growth and deeper faith.

As you journey through this season, trust that God is working to bring about something beautiful. By aligning your values with His Word, you will find a renewed sense of purpose and an authentic life that reflects His glory.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Take time this week to reflect, pray, and listen for God’s voice. He will guide you as you uncover the values that honor Him and lead you to the abundant life He has promised.

Yours Truly,

Jordan Illsley, Board of Directors for Last Harvest
